What is on-demand self storage?
Traditional self storage means driving to a warehouse with your car, loading and unloading yourself, and paying for a unit by the month. Smoves is on-demand self storage: we pick up your boxes at your door in Milan, keep them safe for the whole period and bring them back when you return. You never leave home.
How is it different from traditional self storage?
Three differences: 1) we handle pickup and redelivery at your door, so no van rental and no trip to the outskirts; 2) you start at one square meter, while a warehouse's smallest unit is already bigger than what you need; 3) every box carries a QR label, and the list of your items opens from your account on the website. You pay for the size you choose, from 1 m², month by month.
How much does self storage for students in Milan cost?
The price has two lines: a fixed monthly rate for the square meters you take up, and the pickup at your door, paid once. You pay for the redelivery when you book it. The boxes and suitcases from one room usually fit in one or two square meters. The quote shows you the rate and the pickup before you book.
Is there an app to track my boxes?
No, we don't have an app. Every box carries a label with a unique QR code, logged at pickup, and the list of your items opens from your account on the website with your booking credentials, on a phone or a laptop.

Can I use self storage as an international or Erasmus student?
Yes. The service runs in English and Italian, and we store your boxes for the entire exchange duration, even 6, 9 or 12 months.
How long does storage last? Can I choose the period?
You choose the pickup date, and you book the redelivery when you need it. You pay the rate month by month, with no fixed term: a summer, a semester, a full academic year.
Do I need to be there for the pickup?
You or someone you've delegated, a flatmate for example, needs to be there in the time slot you choose. Someone has to let us in and hand over the boxes.
Where do you keep my boxes? Is it safe?
In an indoor facility, dry and access-controlled, with CCTV and an alarm. Every box is checked at pickup, labeled with a unique code and logged in our system.
How do I book self storage?
Online: pick how many square meters you need and the pickup date, and pay securely. The monthly rate is locked at booking. You book and pay for the redelivery when you need it.

How self storage with doorstep pickup works
You book online, choosing how many square meters you need and your pickup date. We come to your place to collect the boxes: if you can't be there, a flatmate or someone else you've delegated can open the door. We keep them in a dry, access-controlled warehouse, and when you need them you book the redelivery.
Every box carries a label with a unique QR code, and the list of your items opens from your account on the website: you know what you left and where it is, from pickup to redelivery. There's no app to download.
When you return we bring everything to the address you choose. Meanwhile you pay only for the space you choose, from 1 m²: you set the size when you book, not the smallest unit the warehouse happened to have free that day.
How much does self storage cost for a student in Milan?

Is a traditional storage unit better than on-demand self storage?
It depends. If you have plenty of material, a car, frequent access and a stay longer than a year, the classic unit costs less. If you need a few square meters, have no car and your dates are set by a tenancy agreement, pickup at your door usually wins: with a unit the trip is yours, and four to six hours of loading and driving are a cost even if they never reach an invoice.
Do I need a car to use self storage in Milan?
No. A warehouse unit assumes you can get there: with Area C running Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 19:30, and an ATM student pass that covers the trams but not your boxes, «I'll drive over» is the part of the plan that breaks first. We come to you, in the time slot you choose.
Who is behind Smoves
Smoves started in Milan in 2026, from a June move done as a student living away from home, boxes in arms. The founder is Francesco Nigro, his business partner Giulia Massari. Since then the service has opened up to anyone, from families to businesses. The warehouse your things end up in is dry and access-controlled.
