What we mean by self-storage
Self-storage is the classic rental model: you rent a fixed-size unit in a warehouse, you access it whenever you want (usually with a badge or code), you sign a fixed-term contract. It was born in the US in the 1960s and reached Milan in the last 15 years with chains like MyPlace, Casaforte, BoxMyPlace, Annex.
The idea is simple: you pay per cubic meter (or square foot), you're autonomous, you have a key. It works great for people with a lot to store (a full move, business inventory, corporate archive) and a car to reach the warehouse.
How much self-storage costs in Milan
We report indicative prices published on the websites of the main operators in Milan (always verify before booking, rates change often):
**MyPlace Self Storage** — Small unit around 1 m³: about €70-90/month. 3 m³ unit: about €130-180/month. Renewable monthly contract, locations in Milano Mecenate and others.
**Casaforte** — 1 m³ unit: about €60-90/month. 3 m³ unit: about €130-170/month. Locations in Milan and the metropolitan area.
**BoxMyPlace / Annex** — Similar ranges, with monthly minimums and initial deposit.
The critical point for a student: the minimum unit is almost always 1 m³ (cubed). If you have 5-10 boxes you're wasting space (and money) because you pay for a full cube. Typical math: 5 medium boxes fit in 0.5 m³ — but you pay for a full 1 m³.
When self-storage really makes sense
Self-storage is the right choice in specific cases:
**Moving an entire apartment**: if you need to move furniture, appliances, beds — the volume justifies a large unit and per-m³ pricing becomes competitive.
**You need frequent access**: self-storage gives you 24/7 access with a key. If you stop by weekly to grab things, it's unbeatable.
**You own a car and live near the warehouse**: most Milan self-storage locations are on the outskirts (Mecenate, Bovisa, Rho). Without a car, reaching them with a box in hand is awkward.
When self-storage does NOT work for a student
For an away-from-home university student, traditional self-storage has 4 practical problems:
**1. You pay for space you don't use**: 5-10 boxes take up fractions of a m³, but the minimum unit is 1 m³. You're paying triple what you need.
**2. You have to get there**: without a car, carrying boxes to the outskirts becomes an ordeal. Taxis, friends with cars, rental vans — hidden costs.
**3. Rigid contracts**: often there are deposits, monthly minimums, cancellation rules. For a 3-month summer storage they're overkill.
**4. Zero service**: nobody picks up at your home, nobody actively looks after your stuff, nobody delivers it back. You're on your own.
How Smoves compares to traditional self-storage
Smoves was built exactly for the case self-storage doesn't cover well: few boxes, no car, limited duration, zero desire to go to the outskirts.
**Price per box, not per cube**: you only pay for the boxes you actually store. 5 small boxes cost about €25-35/month in Milan, versus €70+ for a self-storage unit.
**Door-to-door pickup included**: we come to your home, residence or shared apartment. No car needed, no need to step out.
**No annual contract, no deposit**: you only pay for the period you need. Typical use case: June-September. Typical cost: €80-150 for an entire summer of storage.
**Delivery in September (or whenever)**: we bring everything back to your new apartment, even in a different part of Milan.
Decision: which one to choose?
Let's summarise. Go with **traditional self-storage** if: you have furniture and many boxes, you have a car, you need frequent access, you'll use it for more than 6 continuous months.
Go with **Smoves** if: you have up to ~15-20 boxes, you don't have a car, you need 2-6 months of storage, you want pickup and delivery included without logistical headaches.
For most away-from-home university students in Milan — Politecnico, Bocconi, Statale, Cattolica, IULM, Humanitas — the use case falls into the second group. Smoves was built exactly around this profile.
