Smoves vs traditional self-storage: which is the right choice for a student?

Two different services solving the same problem

From the outside they look similar: you need a place to leave your things for a few months, and someone offers it for a price. In practice, Smoves and traditional self-storage centres (Shurgard, CubeSmart, etc.) are very different products, with use cases that only partly overlap.

This article compares the two approaches on the parameters that really matter: total cost (not just the "shop window" price), time required, convenience, security and flexibility. Spoiler: neither is "better in absolute terms" — it depends on who you are and what you're storing.

Traditional self-storage: how it works

Self-storage centres rent closed boxes of various sizes (from 1 m² to 10+ m²) with free access. You sign a contract, pay a monthly fee and have a key/code to enter whenever you want during opening hours.

But YOU have to take your things to the centre, unload them, organise them in the box and return to the centre every time you want to take something out or add. Most centres are outside the city centre — in Milan often around Linate, Bovisa, Quarto Oggiaro or peripheral towns.

Smoves: how it works

Smoves is a door-to-door pickup+storage+delivery service, designed specifically for away-from-home students. You book online, indicate date and box count, get an instant quote. An operator comes to your flat to pick up the boxes on the agreed day. They're kept in a warehouse and we deliver them to your new address when you're ready.

There's no box dedicated to you: your boxes are individually tracked with unique codes and seals. You can't access them physically at any time — the model is "you leave them, we give them back", not "come and go".

Price comparison: what you actually pay

**Self-storage**: the "shop window" price starts around €50-80/month for the smallest box in Milan. But the real cost includes: round-trip transport (if you don't have a car: van rental ~€80/day, or multiple car trips), your time or friends'/family's, contracts often binding for 1-3 minimum months.

**Smoves**: the price is per box and includes pickup, storage and delivery. For an average student (8-15 boxes) for 3 summer months, the total cost is generally lower than equivalent self-storage when you also factor in transport.

Rule of thumb: under 15-20 boxes and without a car, Smoves wins. Above 20-30 boxes with a car available, self-storage can become competitive.

Time and effort: the invisible cost

Self-storage takes time: finding the right centre, signing the contract, organising transport, loading, unloading, organising, repeating at the end of storage. Typically 4-6 hours total for an average student.

Smoves requires 3 minutes to book and zero on pickup day (you don't need to be there if you've left the boxes accessible). The return is symmetric.

If you value your time at €10/hour, the 4-6 hours of self-storage "cost" an extra €40-60 that's often not factored in.

When self-storage wins

Self-storage is the right choice if:

**You have a lot of material** (furniture, appliances, bulky items that don't fit in standard boxes).

**You need frequent access** during the storage period (e.g. you work from home and use storage as an archive).

**You have a car/van** available and time to do the transport yourself.

**You're storing long-term** (12+ months): at that point monthly costs are significant anyway, and the flexibility justifies the initial effort.

When Smoves wins

Smoves is the right choice if:

**You're an away-from-home student** who needs to clear the room for summer or Erasmus.

**You have 5-20 boxes** of personal stuff (books, clothes, sheets, kitchen kit, various items).

**You don't have a car** or don't want/can't organise transport.

**You don't need to access** the items during the storage period.

**You want a transparent price** clear from the start, with no monthly contracts or surprises.
